These batteries power a multitude of everyday items from laptops and mobile phones to hybrid and electric vehicles, this technology has grown in popularity due to it’s light weight, high energy density and ability to recharge. However, they come with inherent dangers that cannot be ignored.
BE PROACTIVE WITH YOUR PROTECTION
By 2026, nearly a third of all new car sales in the UK are expected to be electric meaning advanced safety precautions are becoming increasingly necessary as the number of electric vehicles (EVs) on the road rises. Even though EVs are a huge advancement in environmentally friendly transportation, they also present new challenges, especially with regard to fire safety.
While there is no evidence to suggest EVs are more likely to
catch fire than fossil fuelled vehicles, those with Lithium-ion batteries do burn hotter and faster, the batteries can also re-ignite hours or even days after the fire is initially controlled.
There is no simple solution to extinguish EV fires. Traditional methods are not yielding results.
Thermal runaway, or thermal propagation, starts when the heat generated with a lithium-ion battery exceeds the amount that is dissipated to its surroundings. There are several reasons as to the cause including:
The idea that water can regulate heat propagation is regrettably untrue. Cooling the battery is the only way to put out a lithium battery fire. As an example, consider cooling the batteries with water while raising the burning car to get to the battery location. This is a time-consuming method and requires a lot of water.
Because electric vehicles are constructed with multiple insulating layers of air and metal, this method typically has a limited impact. The pollution of air and groundwater caused by thousands of litres of water seeping into the ground is another significant issue with water use. Applying water to a fire or a battery that has already overheated can exacerbate the situation and result in multiple short circuits throughout the batteries.
Electric vehicle (EV) fire blankets are large, heat-resistant blankets designed to cover an EV that is on fire, particularly one experiencing a thermal runaway in its battery. These blankets are important for several reasons, especially at EV charging points, where the risk of battery fires is somewhat higher due to the constant flow of electricity and potential overheating.
FIRE PROTECTION FOR THE EVOLVING WORLD
Lithium-ion batteries are prevalent throughout the workplace,
used in laptops, mobile phones as well as employee personal items such as electric cigarettes, creating one of the greatest fire risks to businesses if they are not prepared.
The LFX range from CheckFire has been specifically designed to
tackle dangers across a wide range of applications. In addition to primary fire risk, the LFX fluorine-free fire extinguishers also protect from secondary A-class fires, effectively tackling peripheral fires that have been caused by exploding batteries.
NTA 8133 is the first standardised publication of testing for portable fire extinguishers on lithium ion battery fires with medium capacities up to 600WH. The Commander EDGE LFX 6ltr and 9ltr fire extinguishers are both NTA 8133approved.
· LFX is an effective water-based fire extinguishing agent that is excellent at quickly putting out flames
· LFX is endothermic. It has remarkable heat-absorbing properties that break down the chain reaction in thermal runaway and prevent other cells from overheating.
· The CommanderEdge range of LFX fire extinguishers also protect from secondary A-class fires. This allows the fire extinguishers to quickly tackle peripheral fires that have been caused by exploding
batteries.
CommanderEDGE 3ltr LFX Lithium-Ion Battery Fire Extinguisher
The 3ltr LFX fire extinguisher is designed to tackle batteries with a power range up to 300Wh. This compact yet high-performing fire extinguisher is ideal for workshops using cordless drills, mobile phones and laptop repair stores, and homes where items such as laptops are in use.

CommanderEDGE 6ltr LFX Lithium-Ion Battery Fire Extinguisher
When the Watt-hours reach up to 600 a 6ltr LFX fire extinguisher is required to mitigate the risks of any potential fires. These units are also well-suited to enviorments such as supermarkets, which house large amounts of lithium-ion powered scanners, as well as homes with devices such as hoverboards.
